Walking in Burgundy in Style

This tour in France’s Burgundy region is perfect if you want to sample delicious food and wine, while walking at a relaxed pace. The walking is easy-going with ample opportunity to stop for wine tastings along the way. You will be walking on a mixture of paved/unpaved quiet country roads and woodland trails. Stay in a mix of 4* standard hotels, guesthouses and chateaux. A free day in Beaune allows plenty of time for discovery or relaxing.

This trip is rated Easy to Moderate, with daily hikes ranging from 9 km (5 miles) to 12 km (7.5miles). Most of the routes are flat and gentle, with just a few short climbs to keep things interesting - like the ascent out of Gevrey on Day 3 as you head to Nuits-Saint-Georges. Don’t worry, it’s brief and totally manageable for regular walkers or beginners with a decent level of fitness.

We’ve built some flexibility into the itinerary to make sure you can enjoy the trip your way. Day 5 is a free day in Beaune, perfect for relaxing or exploring at your own pace. And on Day 6, the walk from Meursault to Beaune can easily be shortened (4.5km/2.7miles).

You’ll enjoy a mix of walking surfaces, from quiet tarmac country roads to dirt paths and woodland trails. The variety keeps things fresh and adds to the charm of the journey.

This trip is perfect for beginners, regular walkers seeking a laid-back adventure, and anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. You don’t need any prior experience with long-distance walking or technical skills - just a basic level of fitness to enjoy the journey comfortably.

Note: Please be advised that the accommodations we partner with in Gevrey-Chambertin do not have twin rooms available, so we will book two single rooms instead. The total cost already reflects this.

Meals

Start each day with a delicious breakfast, and look forward to an included dinner at an award-winning gastronomic restaurant in Beaune (on day 4. Note: Dinner might be moved to day 5 or 6 depending on availability). This is usually at Loiseau des Vignes, a Michelin-recommended gem owned by the renowned French chef Bernard Loiseau. For the other evenings, you’ll have plenty of dining options in each town. You’ll be spoiled for choice! Beaune boasts two award-winning restaurants, and Dijon has several as well. 

As for lunch, you can grab fresh, local items from supermarkets or the neighbourhood boulangerie.

All trails are way-marked, and together with access to our GPS-following app, maps and route notes you will have no problem finding your way.

This tour runs from mid-May to mid-October, and any time during this period is perfect for walking. If you’re visiting in late September, you’ll catch the grape harvest in action—a fascinating time to be in the vineyards! Just keep in mind that it’s a busy period, with more vehicles on the small country roads than usual.

Summer brings high temperatures, especially under the midday sun. Since many of the walking routes have little shade, you’ll likely spend extended periods in the sun. To make the most of it, we recommend starting your days early, staying hydrated, and bringing the right gear. If you’re not a fan of the heat, consider visiting in the cooler months of Spring or Autumn for a more comfortable experience.

NOTE: Due to weekly opening schedules, there are some limitations to your inclusions:

- The wine tour in Vosne Romanée isn’t available on Sundays. If your tour starts on a Friday, we’ll offer you a discount to make up for it.

There are several different options available when getting to Dijon. You can fly to any major Paris Airport ( Paris Charles de Gaulle, Orly or Beauvais) then take a train or bus from the airport to the city centre and from the centre (Gare de Lyon) take a direct TGV train to Dijon (approx. 1 hour 40 mins). You could also fly into Lyon and take a direct train from there (approx 2 hours).

On your departure day you will be transferred from your hotel in Meursault to Beaune train station. From here you can take a train back to Dijon (approx. 30 mins). Train details can be found at SNCF. From Dijon you can take a TGV train to many locations in France and Europe, or continue home via one of the methods mentioned in the ‘Getting to’ section. 

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight accommodation. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg (44lbs) per person.
