Upon your arrival at Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP), you can take a comfortable bus transfer to the charming town of Stresa. Alternatively, you can travel to Stresa by train via Switzerland, with a scenic connection through Basel.

Stresa, a jewel on the shores of Lake Maggiore, welcomes you with its enchanting blend of natural beauty and timeless elegance. Nestled between the shimmering waters of the lake and the majestic Alpine foothills, this picturesque town offers a tranquil atmosphere. Day 2 Exploring the Borromean Islands 1.5 miles / 2.5 km

No visit to Stresa would be complete without a trip to the Borromean Islands, a highlight of Lake Maggiore. A short and pleasant boat ride takes you to Isola Bella, the crown jewel of the archipelago. Day 3 A Scenic Walk along the Chestnut Trail 5 miles / 8 km

On your third day, immerse yourself in nature with a visit to the nearby town of Belgirate, easily reached by bus or train. From here, embark on the delightful Chestnut Trail. This picturesque trail winds its way through lush woodlands dominated by ancient chestnut trees, a proud symbol of the region.

Today, we invite you to two marvelous walks—both perfect for discovering the beauty of Lake Maggiore on foot:

Enchanted Fairy Forest near Germignaga: Wander through a magical forest with moss-covered trees, babbling streams, and charming little bridges. Your path leads to the picturesque village of Bedero Valtravaglia, where the Collegiate Church of San Vittore sits atop a hill, overlooking the impressive fortifications of the Cadorna Line. Back in Germignaga, enjoy the beach and park.

Hilltop Walk between Luino and Maccagno: Follow the Via Verde Varesina through rolling wooded hills with stunning lake views. Along the way, you’ll pass through the tranquil village of Colmegna, featuring its inviting beach.

Day 6 Travel to Lugano & Explore the city 2 miles / 3.5 km

Today, your journey takes you to the picturesque city of Lugano, Switzerland. Begin with a scenic bus ride to Ponte Tresa Station, where a waiting train whisks you away within minutes. Upon arrival, a charming funicular ride takes you down to Lugano’s vibrant city center.

Wander through the old town’s cobbled streets, dotted with boutique shops and inviting cafés. Dive into culture at the Museo Cantonale d’Arte or explore global heritage at the Museo delle Culture. Take a leisurely stroll along the Lungolago Lakeside Promenade, where sculptures and stunning lake views create a serene atmosphere.

Day 7 Hiking Monte San Salvatore 6 miles / 9 km

After a delightful breakfast, an unforgettable day of hiking awaits. With your Ticino Ticket, enjoy free transport to Paradiso, where a funicular conveniently takes you to the summit of Monte San Salvatore. At over 900 meters (3000 ft), take the time to enjoy the views of Lake Lugano.

The descent to Morcote leads through picturesque forests and past Alpe Vicania, perfect for a restful break. Just before Morcote, discover the remarkable Chiesa di Santa Maria del Sasso, adorned with 16th-century frescoes. Morcote, one of Switzerland's most beautiful villages, enchants with its scenic lakeside promenade and charming arcades. Return to Lugano at your leisure by boat.

Alternatively, you can descend directly to Paradiso in about an hour, leaving more time for discoveries in Lugano.

On this relaxed walking holiday, you will explore the Italian side of Lake Maggiore and the Swiss Lake Lugano. You will stay in three different locations, each offering cozy and welcoming accommodation. As there is no luggage transfer included you will take the luggage with you on the ferry when you change from Stresa to Luino and on the bus/ train between Luino to Lugano. Discover the unique charm of the region on gentle lakeside walks or easy to moderate hikes into the surrounding hills. Along the way, you’ll encounter picturesque towns with splendid promenades, stunning gardens, and enchanting islands.

This tour is classified as easy to moderate, with walks ranging from 2.5 to 9 km (1.5 to 5.5 miles) in length. As part of our Slower Adventure style, we’ve designed the itinerary to include shorter walks wherever possible, allowing you more time to immerse yourself in the charming towns and enjoy the journey at a relaxed pace.

While the distances are manageable, please note that the terrain can occasionally present challenges, such as cobblestones and some elevation changes. Most walking is on forest trails or meadow paths. The greatest elevation gain is approximately +570m (1900ft), with descents of up to -815m (2700ft). We’ve made every effort to minimise these climbs and descents, but the hilly nature of this beautiful Italian region means some effort is needed to reach those incredible views!

By striking a balance between rewarding walking experiences and plenty of time for rest and exploration, this trip ensures a pace that is both enjoyable and achievable for walkers of varying experience levels.

Experience & Fitness

The walks include stone steps and some ups and downs, so it’s a good idea to do a bit of practice before you set off. Starting a few weeks in advance with regular strolls, perhaps on uneven terrain or gentle inclines, will help build your confidence. If you’re already a regular walker, you’ll find the routes very manageable. And even if you’re not, taking your time and walking at your own pace will ensure success—you’ll enjoy every step!
