Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Amalfi and overnightThe small town of Amalfi is easily reached from Naples by taking a direct train to Sorrento and continuing on to Amalfi by bus or ferry. The town has a small beach, lively piazzas with bars and restaurants, and a cluster of white buildings overlooking the sea. It is the ancient capital of the Amalfi Maritime Republic and is surrounded by high mountains.
Take your time to explore its cobbled streets, walk along the colorful marina and make sure to grab a limoncello spritz next to its impressive Byzantine-influenced cathedral to celebrate your arrival on the Amalfi Coast.
Centrally located on Amalfi's seaside promenade, just a few steps from both the beach and the cathedral in the historic centre of Amalfi. The rooftop terrace bar, swimming pool and solarium offer fantastic sea views. The hotel also has a sauna, steam bath, wine cellar, and a restaurant. All rooms are spacious and elegantly furnished in a traditional Mediterranean style. This hotel has signed up to the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge.
Follow a scenic path passing waterfalls, old buildings and lemon groves. Upon reaching the medieval Tower of Zirro you are rewarded with the first of many coastal views. Enter the Valley of the Ancient Mills and explore the ruins of the many paper factories which date back to the 11th century.
The hamlet of Ravello is one of this trip's highlights and is often said to have a 'metamorphic' effect on people. Discover Villa Cimbrone and its picturesque gardens just south of Ravello's Duomo (cathedral) and soak in its style and glamour.
Hike back to Amalfi via Atrani descending one continuous staircase down to the clear sea or alternatively, catch a local bus (15-20 min, payable locally). We can also pre-arrange a private transfer between Amalfi and Ravello for you at extra cost and as the buses can be quite crowded we strongly recommend you request this at the time of booking.

Take a boat or bus to Maiori and stroll along the villages of Minori and Atrani on your way back to Amalfi.
Maiori is an elegant seaside resort on the Amalfi Coast. The beach is one of the most famous and longest beaches on the Amalfi Coast. It is known for its crystal-clear water, fine sand and picturesque surroundings. After exploring the village follow the Path of Lemons to Minori, and visit Villa Romana, Roman ruins from the 1st century B.C. This villa offers an insight into the life and wealth of the Roman patricians and displays frescoes, clay pots and wall remains.
Continue the path above the sea to Amalfi. The old town center of Amalfi is a popular place for a stroll, with narrow streets and small boutiques where you can buy souvenirs and typical regional products.

Enjoy an energizing breakfast and some Italian coffee before heading to Bomerano by private transfer.
From here, you have a choice of hikes along the first section of the famous Path of the Gods. This is a more challenging hike on uneven terrain with endless rewards. Glittering sea views from the ancient path will have you continually reaching for your camera.
The shorter option is hiking the first section of the Path of the Gods from Bomerano to your next overnight destination Praiano. The path is a long downhill stretch with constant awe-inspiring views of Positano and Capri.
Alternatively follow the Path of Gods with less descent to Nocelle and take a bus to Positano. Explore Positano, the pearl of the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The popular holiday resort is known for its colorful houses, which are built in steps on the steep slopes of the mountains. The alleyways of Positano are lined with small boutiques selling local fashion. At the end of the day take a short 10-15min bus or taxi ride back to Praiano.
Its cliff side position provides incredible sea views from the sun terrace where breakfast is served, and, in the evening, where guests can relax in style with a glass of wine to watch the sunset. The beach is within a few minutes' walk by accessing the hotel's very own private staircase. Rooms are decorated in a Mediterranean style with bright, floral, handmade tiling in the unique bathrooms, and rooms offer guests ocean views.
Today the choice is yours; take a well-earned rest day visiting nearby Positano, browsing its chic boutiques and soaking up the Southern Italian charm. There is certainly no shortage of fine restaurants and flower-filled courtyards to enjoy a refreshing drink, a bite to eat or a lemon-flavored gelato. Reach Positano in 10-15min by bus/ taxi.
Or stay in Praiano to explore. Praiano was formerly known as a silk-production center and many of the dukes of Amalfi made it their summer residence. It has a calmer and more low-key feel about it which is a true delight for those looking for some relaxation.
Enjoy a short and moderate hike from your hotel to the outskirts of Furore through the Valley of Praia. This route allows you to ‘zoom in’ and provides the opportunity to explore this dramatic coastline. Visit the natural harbor of Marina di Praia with its colorful boats and popular sandy beach before returning to Praiano the same way you came.Â

Other Information
Is it for me?This self-guided hiking trip is one of our Slower Adventures, with daily hikes of 6 miles or less, and plenty of time for cultural immersion and sightseeing. Its easy-going pace and flexibility allow you to really experience the best of the Amalfi Coast, and being only 6 days, it fits easily into your larger travel plans or provides you with the option to add an extra free day in the location of your choosing. As this tour is designated In Comfort, you'll relax each night in carefully chosen and exquisite 4 star boutique hotels, all with unforgettable sea views. The hiking is mostly moderate on undulating coastal trails and mountain paths, however do note that some hikes are more challenging due to the elevation gains and losses and the high number of stone staircases involved, so a head for heights is necessary and hiking poles to support your knees are recommended.
Slower Adventures | Where walking and cycling meet easy-going exploring, our Slower Adventures are the perfect combination. Most days are filled with picturesque journeys with some free time to dive into the destination and experience the people, local food and culture as you go.
Multi Centre Walking | With a mix of loop and point-to-point walks stay 2 or 3 nights in one place which offers the chance to slow down and really explore a destination.
Solo Travellers, Families with Teens
The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years
This adventure is graded moderate with hiking days of up to 6 miles (9.6 km) and has some challenging hikes that are optional with significant elevation gains and losses. This trip is best for those with a good level of fitness. On some hikes, the path can be close to the cliff edges with sheer drops which would not be appropriate for people suffering with vertigo or a fear of heights. It should be noted that some sections include prolonged descents and ascents on stony stairs which can be tough on the knees, so we would strongly recommend taking hiking poles and perhaps knee supports if needed. It’s best ahead of time to do some practice hikes including stairs and ascents and descents like those you will experience on the trip while carrying your day pack. The terrain consists of footpaths, dirt tracks, stepped trails, lots of stone staircases, and some sections that are uneven underfoot. There may be some short sections of road hiking, but not on busy roads or traffic routes. You will occasionally be following minor paved roads, mostly to get from the end of your hiketo your hotel.
The carefully chosen small boutique hotels on this tour are all rated 4 star and they all provide wonderful sea views. All offer a warm welcome, Italian hospitality and delicious local food and drink. The hotels mentioned in the itinerary are subject to availability, and early booking is highly recommended for June-September in particular, as this is a very popular area.
Accommodation Details
We will always try and accommodate you at the locations detailed, but because of limited availability (especially June-September) we may have to accommodate you at an alternative location of the same or better standard (a supplement may be possible). Alternative details will be noted at the time of confirmation.
Â
Room Upgrades
There are room upgrade options in the hotels used on this trip, please speak to our Sales team at the time of booking if this is something you are interested in.
Additional Nights
You may wish to add some extra nights along the route, either to rest, sightsee or for those with plenty of energy to explore some of the other hiking opportunities nearby. Please let us know if this is of interest at the time of booking.
Single Rooms & Solo Hikers
This self-guided tour is available for solo hikers but we would recommend that you are experienced in hiking and navigating alone and there is a solo hiker supplement payable. If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable.Â
Meals
Breakfast is included each morning. In Italy, this is generally a light continental breakfast with baked goods. Lunch and dinner are not included but are available from your hotel or nearby restaurants. The food of the Amalfi coast is strongly influenced by local produce. Traditional specialities include seafood and gnocchi alla sorrentina.
The routes are waymarked in some areas, but not in others. However, we provide the Macs Adventure Smartphone App making it simple to follow the route using a smartphone. Rest assured that by downloading the route maps in our app, that this will continue to work even in areas without any cellular or internet reception.Â
Please be aware that although the buses on the Amalfi Coast run frequently, they are also a very popular way to travel and are therefore often busy, especially the closer to summer you travel. If buses are full the driver won't stop or will turn you away and you will have to wait for the next bus. The buses also tend to be busier when it's raining with people cutting the hikes short, so it's best to pack suitable raingear for waiting, head to a local cafe to wait out the rain or hop in a taxi instead. Taxis are more expensive in Amalfi than many other areas of Italy. On some routes you may also find it quicker to use a ferry rather than wait for the bus. More information on the ferries can be found here.

This Amalfi Coast self-guided hiking tour is available from April to October. You can start your tour on any date in the season apart from the period between the mid of July and late August as this is the hottest time of year when it is unpleasant to walk in this area. Hotel bookings during that time are also almost impossible to secure due to it being the Italian summer holidays, and the hiking routes tend to be crowded, so we feel it’s best to avoid travelling during this period.
Spring in the Amalfi Coast is sublime and April, May and June are absolutely lovely. May is when most of the wildflowers tend to be in bloom. Autumn is a perfect time of year as the landscape is made up of a gold and red pallet so September and October are unmissable.
Please note that you should ideally book 6 months in advance if you are intending on travelling in early July, at the end of August or in September. Early booking is recommended in order to secure the best choice of accommodation at this busy time of year. It is best if you have some flexibility regarding your dates and itinerary.Â
The Amalfi Coast is known to have long, hot summers with July and August being the hottest months. Always make sure to stay hydrated and carry plenty of water while out exploring. During summer it is not unlikely for the temperatures to rise above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) during the day which can be very hot for hiking. You will have to start early to miss the heat of the day and carry a lot of water (additional weight) with you.Â
The months before and after the summer season will be sunny but a little cooler, which could be preferable. Spring on the Amalfi Coast is sublime with wildflowers in bloom and a more comfortable temperature; April, May and June are absolutely lovely. Autumn is a great time of year as the landscape is made up of gold and red pallet and it cools down during the night, September and October are unmissable. May, June & September are the most popular months for visiting Amalfi.
Due to climate change, there are more frequent bursts of torrential rainfall, which are known to have triggered mud and landslides in the Amalfi Coast area in the past. However, local partners keep us informed of any geological risks i.e., a necessity to do an alternate hike due to the trail being closed. This does not happen very often but it’s good to be informed that this could potentially be the case, and we will of course inform you if this arises.
This trip starts in the town of Amalfi. We recommend flying into Naples Airport. From there you can take a Curreri bus from outside the terminal to Sorrento which takes 1hr15. Alternatively, you can take a direct Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento which takes 1hr30. From Sorrento, take a SITA bus to Amalfi which takes around 1hr40. In total the journey from the airport will take 3-3hr30 on average.
Alternatively, we can arrange a private transfer at an additional cost, please let us know if this is of interest.
Another option when travelling between May and October between Naples Airport and Amalfi is to take the Pintour Shuttle Bus service. The journey takes about 1hr50 and timetables can be found on the Pintour website.
Coming from the Fiumicino airport in Rome you need to change trains in Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale to get to Sorrento. Total travelling time to Sorrento is about three hours. The bus from the Sorrento train station to Amalfi takes around 1hr15.
This trip ends in Praiano, and from there you can return to Naples Airport by SITA bus to Sorrento, which takes around 1hr15 and then Curreri shuttle bus to Naples Airport which takes 1hr30. Or take the SITA bus to Sorrento and then the  Circumvesuviana train to Naples Train Station which takes 1hr30 and ALIBUS shuttle bus to Naples Airport. In total the journey from the airport will take 3-3hr30 on average.
Another option, if travelling between May and October, would be to get the SITA bus to Amalfi, taking about 25mins. Then between Amalfi and Naples Airport is the Pintour Shuttle Bus service. The journey takes about 1hr50 and timetables can be found on the Pintour website.
Alternatively, we can arrange a private transfer at an additional cost, please let us know if this is of interest.
Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight accommodation. Only one bag of up to 44lbs/20kg per person is included, extra bags must be pre-arranged at extra cost to avoid expensive on trip surcharges.
This hiking trip is graded moderate and involves 4.5 - 5.5 hours of hiking each day, with some hikes being on the challenging side so you should enjoy an active lifestyle to undertake this adventure. If you prefer a more relaxed and flexibile itinerary, please see our other Amalfi hiking tours or inquire with your Sales Specialist.Â
