A land of rugged mountains, ancient forests, and dramatic coastlines, Scotland is a paradise for hikers. With a right-to-roam philosophy and a network of well-marked national trails, Scotland’s Great Trails offer an incredible self-guided hiking experience.

The famous West Highland Way and Great Glen Way are quite deservedly the most well-known of Scotland's Great Trails, but there are many lesser-known trails, perfect for exploration and a slightly quieter experience. Walk the Fife Coastal Path for incredible beach and cliff views; embark on a pilgrimage of St Cuthbert's Way; take on Rob Roy Way, through the Trossachs National Park, homeland of Scotland's infamous folk hero and outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor; or select from any of the others for memorable trail experiences and bragging rights. And while not an official Great Trail, The Skye Trail deserves an honorable mention with its rugged landscapes with towering spires of rock, beaches and ancient castles.

Whether you dream of hiking the West Highland Way, exploring the Isle of Skye, or walking through Edinburgh to the Scottish Highlands, Macs Adventure has the perfect itinerary for you.

  • Walking in the Great Glen Way

This video was made by Ewan, one of our Great Glen Way experts who embarked on this classic walk himself a few years ago. He shows that this route is very well-way-marked and not too strenuous, so that the majority of fit people can accomplish it. With loch-side walking and magnificent views over the Scottish Highlands, this long-distance trail is memorable in many ways. From the exploration of Scotland's turbulent history at Urquhart Castle, to spotting "Nessie", the mythical monster, you are sure to relish this experience.
