Step into old Japan on the Nakasendo Trail, a route once used by samurai and merchants traveling between Kyoto and Tokyo. Winding through the central mountains and the picturesque Kiso Valley, this self-guided walking route offers a unique glimpse of Japan’s feudal past—without the crowds.
You’ll walk between post towns that feel like living museums, complete with narrow streets, wooden buildings, and that classic village charm. Our Nakasendo Trail (Walk Only) focuses on the best of the rural route, while the Nakasendo Trail – Kyoto to Tokyo version gives you time in both iconic cities on either end. For a mix of walking, modern cities and ancient capitals, our longer itinerary combines all three with the addition of Mount Koya & Nara.Â
Wherever you begin, expect hearty meals, friendly hosts, and a walking experience that’s steeped in history, beauty, and tradition.
